Absenteeism is all part of my philosophy

So I'm here and still all alive and stuff.
My Grandad had a fairly major heart attack last week but we have been lucky and there is no permanent damage to his heart. He is back with us and being the same sarcastic old bugger he always is.
I have been unwell also- for the last year or so my periods had become light and irregular, which didn't bother me so much. But of late there has been hot flushes, bad skin, weight gain, excess hair. I've been tired and irritable. I also have some fairly bad back pain right now which tends to come on while sleeping. I finally called NHS 24 who told me I should see my GP within the week. So I did, and he is fairly certain that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. For some women it never acts up but for some it can make you produce excess testosterone and also it tends to correlate with insulin resistance. The GP wants to do bloodwork for a hormone profile but we have to wait 21 days to do it because of my cycle (which is reaaallly long. 31 days or so).
I just want for my Grandad to be ok and for me to be not so goddamn hot all the time. For real, the minute I get stressed or something I start boiling in my skin.

Date: 2008-05-02 10:55 am (UTC)I love that he's back to being sarcastic! Probably telling you to bugger off and let him read while you're attempting to smother him with attentive love, no? My kinda guy :)
I'm reading up on PCOS now (have you seen this site? http://www.pcosupport.org/), whenever someone I know (or I myself) is ill it always makes me feel better to know everything I can about what's going on. From what I'm gleaning, if this is what you have, birth control should help. Ahh, messing with one's hormones...fun. Keep me posted on your diagnosis, I tend to be oddly optimistic about these things and may just make you smile once or twice.
My cycle is 35 days! It's normal otherwise, but every couple months I get such bad cramps I black out and can't go to work. Meh, price to be paid for 3 or 4 fewer periods a year than most. Really sucks being a woman sometimes, don't it?
Anyway I hope you get to spend plenty of time with your granddad while he recovers and chat with your aunt a lot and de-stress. And drink tea, tea makes everything better. Iced tea I suppose for you, being boiled alive in your skin and all.

Date: 2008-05-02 09:46 pm (UTC)Thanks- yeah, I also want to know everything RIGHT NOW. Although I really could have done without the actual PHOTOS of cystic ovaries. Not pretty at ALL.
Right now I can't take any birth control- my weight is an issue there. I have to get my BMI down from 44 to 35. Somehow. Despite the fact that the PCOS may be what is causing my rapid weight gain since puberty. Sigh.
Optimistic about Ovaries! It's like a band name!
Next week I go to LONDON. I am going to stalk some bands (THE AUDITION Y/Y?)

Date: 2008-05-02 09:50 pm (UTC)It would actually be funny - the minute I get annoyed I am all TOO HOT OMG. But I can't take any hormones yet because it would mess up the profile in my blood test. Also my BMI is too high for the pill. ARGH.
